If you're looking for a constructive alternative to standard after school care for your elementary school aged child(ren) we have the perfect option. Topkick's award winning After School Program originated as one of the first such programs way back in 1995. Over the decades the program has grown from that first small group to hundreds of after school students each year across our five locations. The program is founded upon the same deep martial art traditions that are found in our martial art classes, with the added benefit of supplying safe, reliable, and constructive after school care. With transportation from school, coverage on select school holidays, and convenient tuition options it's proven a great fit for so many families across Northern Virginia. We're so confident in the program we'll even let you try it out. Click on "Get Started..." on this page to get started.
Parents love a lot of things about TopKick's After School Program. Our positive and supportive teaching style coupled with an awesome curriculum is likely near the top of everyone's list. Our time tested Taekwondo based curriculum is tailored to deliver real results. Even the youngest of our students experience awesome improvements in strength, coordination, flexibility, and agility. However, it's the changes that are not so outwardly apparent that deliver life-long benefits that extend well beyond the Dojang floor.
Learning Taekwondo is difficult at any age. It's been our experience that success requires a positive environment that embraces challenge and makes it fun. That's what we do here at TopKick. We take challenging techniques and teach them in a fun and supportive way. Without fail students who encounter these challenges stand to discover a lot about themselves. Students discover that, with patience, they can achieve the most difficult of tasks. As each hurdle is passed a child's self-confidence grows. Their ability to digest challenge and break it down into achievable bits improves. The self-confidence and skills learned at TopKick have a lasting impact that extends well beyond our walls into each child's future.
We've worked hard for well over 20 years to create spaces that are convenient, safe, and fun. Each TopKick location offers large, open, fully matted workout floors that are perfect for Taekwondo, games, and tons of other dynamic drills. We have awesome activity rooms that supply the perfect environment for some much needed daily down time. Each day has structured time for snacks, homework, art, reading, movies, and much more. Getting to TopKick each day is equally awesome when students hop aboard our purpose built buses that are designed to safely transport children.
The people who make up TopKick are perhaps one of the best reasons to choose us. Our caring instructors and team regularly meet to learn, share, and review the methods that have made TopKick such a special place. We host regular CPR/first aide trainings for our team and require thorough back ground checks for each of our adult staff. We have a company wide value that states "we are relentless in our learning and growth." We feel our efforts are rewarded each year as parents across Northern Virginia recognize TopKick as the perennial favorite in a sea of choices.
Keeping young minds busy with learning activities is imperative during the summer months to combat the potential loss of knowledge and skills learned at school. According to the Center for Summer Learning at The Johns Hopkins University, students usually lose one to two months worth of reading and math skills during their summer break. In fact, teachers often spend four to six weeks at the beginning of each school year re-teaching material that students have forgotten.

Summer learning doesn’t have to be a huge chore for children or their parents, since favorite summer pastimes like backyard cookouts and trips to the beach offer perfect opportunities to learn something new. “Summer is an excellent time for informal education such as trips to museums, public libraries and parks,” says the Center’s Brenda McLaughlin. “All parents can involve their children in fun, everyday activities such as cooking a new recipe or shopping at the local supermarket. These activities can help students practice their math skills, for example.”
During the school year, parents help their children succeed by checking their homework, reading to and with their children, and limiting the amount of time they watch television and play video games. “Children need similar types of academic support during the summer, says McLaughlin. “Regardless of which program or activity parents choose for their children, parents play a critical role in nurturing their children’s natural curiosity to learn new concepts, skills and information both during the summer and throughout the school year.” The Center for Summer Learning offers these easy-to-implement suggestions for fostering summertime learning:
For reading and writing:
1. Read aloud to your kids or have them read aloud to you.
2. Let your child see you reading for pleasure.
3. Visit the local public library and participate in special summer reading programs there.
4. Subscribe to magazines and newspapers and talk about current events with your child.
For math and science:
1. Visit a local park and observe different types of rocks, animals, insects and leaves. If you grew up in a different part of the United States or in a different country, talk about the differences in the types of plants and animals you can find where you live now versus where you used to live.
2. Hang a thermometer outside to track the temperature.
3. Observe weather patterns and make weather forecasts.
4. Plant a garden to show how seeds develop into plants and how fertilizer and weather can affect growth.
5. Participate in a local recycling program and talk about what would happen to the empty containers if you didn’t.
For social studies:
1. Interview older community members about their lives and the history of the neighborhood. Ask them to compare the neighborhood they live in now to the neighborhood where they grew up.
2. Learn capitals, countries and continents by playing games and taking virtual field trips on line. Try Google Earth, it’s great.
3. Take field trips to museums, gardens, zoos and local history sites.
4. Make maps of your neighborhood and places you want to visit with your children.
For children summers are often magical times filled with new adventures and experiences. It’s also a great time to harness the summer excitement and mix in new and exciting opportunities to learn—avoiding the summer learning slide.
