TOPKICK SUMMER CAMPS

When school is out join our dynamically diverse, award winning, day camps. Camps are offered all summer long and on select school holidays, so if school is out there are likely children having a blast at TopKick. As you might expect our day camps offer the same fun, energetic, and constructive martial arts study found throughout our other programs. However, our camps go well beyond being "just" a martial arts camp. TopKick camp days are full of exciting local excursions, crazy cool science experiments, physically focused games, sports, fantastic team building exercises, chill time, and leisurely lunches (and snacks). Area parents have consistently voted TopKick camps to various "best of" lists year over year—something we are very proud of. Join the fun and experience what so many area parents have discovered...TopKick camps rock.

IS THIS THE PERFECT CAMP? QUITE POSSIBLY :)

Sometimes people assume that our camps only consist of martial arts practice, and are thus only for our students. While this is still an occasional misconception most Northern Virginia parents have long ago discovered this isn't the case. While our camps deliver the same quality martial art instruction found in all of our other programs, they also offer a wonderful, well rounded, camp experience for girls and boys who are 4 to 12 years of age. TopKick camp days are high energy, incredibly fun, and physically focused. We offer camps all summer long, during spring break, and on select school holidays. Register on this page and discover TopKick camps this year.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL CAMP DAY CONSIST OF?

Over the last twenty plus years we've constantly tweaked our camps in order to create a product that both children and parents love. While our summer camps are intentionally very structured they are not boring or repetitive. We've worked hard to ensure our days are diverse. Each day begins with drop-off as early as 7:15 AM. Upon arrival campers have varied choices of activities. Throughout each day

Upon arrival campers enter right into any one of our flexible and fun zones. We've structured our camps (and our floor plans) with zones of activity in mind. These zones allow us to offer tons of options for campers each day. Our zone approach also supplies us with a perfect tool for organization during our more structured parts of the day.

AVOID THE SUMMER LEARNING SLIDE

Keeping young minds busy with learning activities is imperative during the summer months to combat the potential loss of knowledge and skills learned at school. According to the Center for Summer Learning at The Johns Hopkins University, students usually lose one to two months worth of reading and math skills during their summer break. In fact, teachers often spend four to six weeks at the beginning of each school year re-teaching material that students have forgotten.

Summer learning doesn’t have to be a huge chore for children or their parents, since favorite summer pastimes like backyard cookouts and trips to the beach offer perfect opportunities to learn something new. “Summer is an excellent time for informal education such as trips to museums, public libraries and parks,” says the Center’s Brenda McLaughlin. “All parents can involve their children in fun, everyday activities such as cooking a new recipe or shopping at the local supermarket. These activities can help students practice their math skills, for example.”

During the school year, parents help their children succeed by checking their homework, reading to and with their children, and limiting the amount of time they watch television and play video games. “Children need similar types of academic support during the summer, says McLaughlin. “Regardless of which program or activity parents choose for their children, parents play a critical role in nurturing their children’s natural curiosity to learn new concepts, skills and information both during the summer and throughout the school year.” The Center for Summer Learning offers these easy-to-implement suggestions for fostering summertime learning:

For reading and writing:
1. Read aloud to your kids or have them read aloud to you.
2. Let your child see you reading for pleasure.
3. Visit the local public library and participate in special summer reading programs there.
4. Subscribe to magazines and newspapers and talk about current events with your child.

For math and science:
1. Visit a local park and observe different types of rocks, animals, insects and leaves. If you grew up in a different part of the United States or in a different country, talk about the differences in the types of plants and animals you can find where you live now versus where you used to live.
2. Hang a thermometer outside to track the temperature.
3. Observe weather patterns and make weather forecasts.
4. Plant a garden to show how seeds develop into plants and how fertilizer and weather can affect growth.
5. Participate in a local recycling program and talk about what would happen to the empty containers if you didn’t.

For social studies:
1. Interview older community members about their lives and the history of the neighborhood. Ask them to compare the neighborhood they live in now to the neighborhood where they grew up.
2. Learn capitals, countries and continents by playing games and taking virtual field trips on line. Try Google Earth, it’s great.
3. Take field trips to museums, gardens, zoos and local history sites.
4. Make maps of your neighborhood and places you want to visit with your children.

For children summers are often magical times filled with new adventures and experiences. It’s also a great time to harness the summer excitement and mix in new and exciting opportunities to learn—avoiding the summer learning slide.
